Norman Rockwell
"Freedom From Want"

A Thanksgiving dinner is the setting for Freedom from Want. The turkey placed in the middle of the picture is the center of attention. A light-drenched window behind the standing characters provides contrast.

Look for ovals—do you see them? They can be found in the tops of the drinking glasses and in the shapes of the plates, leading your eye from the bottom of the table to the top. This rhythm of repeated shapes creates "stepping stones" which guide you right to the turkey.

Conversation among these guests appears to be lively and animated. Rockwell uses expressions on the faces and the postures of the bodies as clues to the dinner dialogue. How might the conversations sound? Who would you talk to if you could be a part of this holiday meal? What kinds of things would you talk about?

Can you picture the rest of the room? What kinds of pictures or family photographs are on their walls? Now, using your imagination, walk around the rest of the house. Is it large or small? Messy or tidy? Does it have an upstairs? As you create the larger scene in your mind, Rockwell's picture becomes more personal to you.

Norman Rockwell probably one of the greatest illustrators - artists of our time.
